About This Recipe

A classic cocktail that combines hot coffee with Irish whiskey and sugar, topped with lightly whipped cream. Originating from Ireland in the 1940s, Irish coffee is warming and smooth: the cream is floated on top so you sip the sweetened coffee through the cool cream. It’s an indulgent after-dinner drink or cold weather treat.

Ingredients

  • 4 ounces hot freshly brewed coffee
  • 1–2 teaspoons brown sugar (to taste)
  • 1 1/2 ounces Irish whiskey (about 1 shot)
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream

Instructions

  1. 1Preheat a heat-safe glass or mug by rinsing it with very hot water, then discard the water.
  2. 2Add the brown sugar to the warm glass. Pour in the hot coffee and stir until the sugar is completely dissolved.
  3. 3Stir in the Irish whiskey. Mix well.
  4. 4Lightly whip the heavy cream until it just starts to thicken but is still pourable (it should be thick but not fully whipped to peaks).
  5. 5Slowly pour the semi-whipped cream over the back of a spoon held just above the coffee’s surface. This helps the cream float atop the coffee rather than sinking. Serve without stirring – sip the coffee through the creamy layer on top.
