Description
George Howell Coffee at The Godfrey is the flagship location in Downtown Crossing and the largest café in the company. Since opening in 2016, it has become a destination for anyone who wants to explore coffee on a deeper level. The space highlights George Howell’s focus on honoring coffee farmers and showcasing the character of each single origin through rotating selections and weekly public classes.
The café was designed by Peter Niemitz and blends contemporary art, modern architecture, and advanced brewing equipment to create an inviting and thoughtful environment. Guests can choose from espresso, drip coffee, Modbar pour overs, and curated coffee flights that highlight terroir and seasonal flavors. The menu also includes pastries, toasts, chocolates, and sandwiches sourced from local artisan vendors.
The retail area, known as The Exploratorium, serves as both a shop and an educational space, offering a wide variety of beans, tools, and classes led by knowledgeable staff who love helping guests find their perfect brew. Open every day of the year, George Howell Coffee at The Godfrey is a place where Boston locals, travelers, and curious coffee drinkers can experience specialty coffee at its best.

The quality of their beans is exceptional, with every cup bursting with rich, nuanced flavors. Whether you’re having a perfectly brewed pour-over or a velvety smooth latte, the attention to detail is evident. The atmosphere is cozy yet modern, making it a great spot to relax or get some work done. The staff is knowledgeable and passionate about coffee, always happy to share recommendations. If you’re serious about good coffee, this place is a must-visit. Highly recommend!
I liked the overall atmosphere of the cafe and the staff were very friendly. Everything was organised in a professional way, displaying their sources and products for you to browse while waiting. One thing that didn’t quite scratch my itch in the cappuccino was the milk felt quite flat and lacked dimension, forcing the coffee to carry more weight of the experience.
